Why Radiators Make Noise and What It Means

A radiator that suddenly starts gurgling during breakfast or tapping after the heating comes on can be unsettling. Understanding why radiators make noise helps you separate a minor issue, such as trapped air, from a problem that needs professional attention. Most sounds have a recognisable cause, and dealing with that cause promptly can protect the warmth, efficiency and reliability of your heating system.

Why radiators make noise in a central heating system

Radiators are not usually the source of every sound you hear. They are part of a wider system involving pipework, valves, a pump and a boiler or heat pump. As hot water moves through that system, pressure, temperature and flow can all create noise.

A small amount of ticking as the system warms up and cools down is often normal. Metal pipes and radiators expand when heated, then contract as they cool. Persistent, loud or newly developed noises, however, are worth investigating. They can indicate air in the system, restricted water flow, loose pipework or a need for maintenance.

The character of the noise matters. A gurgle has a different likely cause from a whistle or a sharp bang, so taking note of when the sound happens and where it seems to come from is useful before arranging a repair.

Gurgling or bubbling sounds

Gurgling is one of the most common radiator complaints in homes across Sussex. It is normally caused by trapped air collecting inside a radiator, particularly at its top. Air prevents hot water from circulating fully, so the radiator may feel warm at the bottom but cooler at the top.

In many cases, carefully bleeding the radiator will release the trapped air and restore even heat. Turn the heating off and allow the system to cool first. Use a radiator key or suitable bleed key, holding a cloth beneath the valve. Open it slowly until air stops escaping and a small, steady trickle of water appears, then close it securely.

If you have a sealed central heating system, check the boiler pressure afterwards. Releasing air can lower the pressure, and it may need topping up in line with the boiler manufacturer’s instructions. Do not over-pressurise the system.

A radiator that needs bleeding repeatedly is not simply an inconvenience. It may suggest a small leak, corrosion within the system or another fault allowing air to enter. This is the point at which a heating engineer should assess the system rather than relying on repeated bleeding.

When gurgling comes from pipes instead

If the gurgling seems to travel through pipework rather than coming from one radiator, there may be air elsewhere in the system or an issue with circulation. This can be more noticeable on older installations, systems with complicated pipe runs, or after drainage and refill work. A professional can identify whether the system needs balancing, cleaning or a more thorough investigation.

Ticking, clicking or tapping radiators

A light tick or tap as heating starts is commonly the sound of expansion. Radiator panels, copper pipes and fittings all move slightly as their temperature changes. Where a pipe passes through a floorboard, wall or joist too tightly, that movement can become noticeably noisy.

The same issue can occur if pipes are clipped too firmly or are rubbing against timber, plasterboard or another pipe. The noise may happen in a regular pattern while the heating is warming up, then fade once temperatures have stabilised.

This is not always a sign of a serious fault, but it can become irritating, particularly in bedrooms and living areas. Resolving it may involve adjusting pipe supports, creating appropriate clearance around pipe penetrations or improving insulation around the pipework. Access can be straightforward in some properties, while concealed pipes under floors or behind walls require a more considered approach.

A clicking thermostatic radiator valve can also occur as its internal mechanism responds to room temperature. If the valve is stuck, difficult to turn or the radiator will not heat properly, it should be checked rather than forced.

Banging or knocking when the heating runs

A loud bang, knock or clunk deserves more attention, especially if it is new. One possible cause is pipework moving against a solid surface as it expands. Another is an imbalance in the heating system, where water flow is not being distributed correctly between radiators.

Sludge and debris can also contribute to poor circulation. Over time, internal corrosion can produce a dark deposit that settles in radiators and pipework. Signs of sludge include cold patches at the bottom of radiators, rooms that take a long time to heat, frequent boiler issues and noise as water struggles to pass through restricted areas.

Depending on the condition of the system, the appropriate solution might be balancing the radiators, fitting or checking a magnetic filter, cleaning individual radiators, or carrying out a full system clean. The right option depends on the age of the installation, water quality and how widespread the symptoms are. A full clean is not automatically necessary for every noisy radiator, but neither should ongoing circulation problems be ignored.

Noise near the boiler is different

Banging, rumbling or a sound similar to a boiling kettle coming from the boiler itself is not a radiator issue to dismiss. It can be associated with restricted flow, limescale, sludge or component faults. Turn the heating off if the noise is severe or accompanied by an error code, loss of heating, leaking water or an unusual smell, then arrange a qualified heating engineer to inspect it.

Do not remove a boiler casing or attempt repairs yourself. Gas appliances must be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Whistling or hissing from a radiator valve

Whistling is often related to water moving too quickly through a partly restricted valve. It can happen when a thermostatic radiator valve is set at a certain position, when the lockshield valve has been adjusted incorrectly, or when pump settings and system resistance are not well matched.

Try noting whether the sound changes when you adjust the radiator’s thermostatic valve. If it does, the valve may need replacing or the system may need balancing. Avoid making repeated large adjustments to lockshield valves unless you understand how the heating system has been balanced, as this can move the problem to another room.

Hissing can occasionally be heard briefly during normal operation, but a constant hiss accompanied by water around a valve points to a leak. Even a slow leak should be dealt with promptly. It can damage flooring and decorations, lower system pressure and introduce fresh oxygen into the system, increasing the risk of corrosion.

A practical check before calling for help

Before arranging a visit, it is helpful to observe a few details. Is one radiator affected or several? Does the noise begin as soon as the heating comes on, or only once the house is warm? Are there cold areas on the radiator? Has boiler pressure dropped, or is there any visible moisture around valves and pipework?

These observations help narrow down the likely cause. You can safely check that radiator valves are open, bleed a radiator if you are confident doing so, and make a note of boiler pressure. Beyond that, avoid dismantling valves, repeatedly topping up pressure, or adding chemical products without advice. These steps can mask the real issue or create further problems.

When to book a heating engineer

Book a professional inspection if the noise is loud, recurring or affecting more than one radiator. You should also seek help where radiators remain cold after bleeding, boiler pressure repeatedly falls, there is visible leakage, or the boiler is making unusual sounds.

For homes with an air source or ground source heat pump, steady and correctly balanced water flow is equally important. Heat pumps generally operate at lower flow temperatures than traditional boilers, so radiators and controls need to work together properly to maintain comfortable rooms efficiently. Noise, uneven warmth or poor performance is worth addressing early.
