A sunny afternoon can produce more electricity than a typical household is using at that moment. The real question is what happens to that energy afterwards. Solar panels are no longer only for households trying to make a green statement. That simple principle explains why solar can be worthwhile. Electricity used directly in the home avoids buying the same amount from your supplier at the full import rate. Exported electricity still has value, but it is commonly paid at a lower rate than the electricity you purchase. A household that can use more of its solar generation is therefore usually in the strongest position.

For example, a family with someone working from home, a washing machine and dishwasher used during the day, or an electric vehicle that can charge when the sun is out may see more benefit than a property that is empty from morning until evening. That does not mean solar is unsuitable for the second household. It simply means the system size, tariff and possible battery storage need more careful consideration.

The factors that make the biggest difference

Your roof is the starting point. A south-facing roof often delivers the highest annual output, but east- and west-facing roofs can also be very effective. An east-west arrangement may generate power across more of the day, which can suit homes where electricity demand is spread between breakfast and the evening.

Shade deserves close attention. A nearby tree, chimney, dormer, neighbouring building or even a television aerial can affect output, particularly if it shades part of an array at key times. Modern panel and inverter designs can help manage the effect of partial shading, but they do not remove the need to assess it properly. A site survey should consider the roof’s orientation, pitch, usable area and condition rather than relying on an aerial image alone.

The age and condition of the roof matter too. Panels are intended to remain in place for many years, so it is sensible to deal with worn coverings, loose tiles or structural concerns before installation. Removing and refitting panels later to undertake roofing work adds cost and disruption.

Your electricity use is just as important as the roof. Looking at annual consumption gives a useful starting point, but the timing of that use is often more revealing. A home that uses most electricity after dark can still benefit from solar, though it may export more daytime generation unless routines are adjusted or a battery is added.

Costs, savings and realistic payback

The financial case for solar PV is best viewed over the long term. Upfront costs vary according to the number and type of panels, access to the roof, scaffolding requirements, inverter specification, electrical work and whether battery storage is included. A larger system is not automatically better if a home will regularly export a high proportion of its generation at a modest rate.

Savings also depend on weather, energy prices, export payments and household behaviour. No installer should promise a fixed annual saving without understanding your property and consumption. Generation estimates are useful, but they are estimates, not guarantees. A particularly sunny year may outperform expectations; a period of lower sunlight, changing tariffs or increased electricity use may alter the result.

There are practical ways to improve the return without compromising daily life. Setting appliances to run during daylight hours, using smart controls and choosing an export tariff that suits your circumstances can all help. If you have an electric vehicle, charging it when solar generation is available can make a meaningful difference. An immersion diverter may also use surplus electricity to heat domestic hot water, although its suitability depends on your existing hot-water cylinder and how you use hot water.

Solar PV should not be judged only by a simple payback figure. It can also offer protection against a proportion of future electricity price rises and reduce the carbon associated with running your home. Those benefits are real, but they should sit alongside, rather than replace, clear calculations on cost and likely output.

Is a solar battery worth adding?

A battery stores surplus solar electricity for use later, often during the evening when household demand rises. It can increase the share of your own generation that you use, which is attractive for homes occupied mainly outside daylight hours.

A battery is not essential for solar PV to work well. It adds to the initial investment and has a finite capacity, so it may fill on very sunny days and provide little benefit when winter generation is low. Its financial value depends on your tariff, electricity habits, battery size and whether it can also charge from the grid at cheaper off-peak times.

For some households, fitting solar panels first and allowing space in the design for a future battery is the sensible route. For others, particularly those with evening demand, an electric vehicle or a time-of-use tariff, installing both together may be more practical. The right answer is based on usage data, not the assumption that every solar system needs a battery.

Solar PV alongside a heat pump or electric vehicle

Solar can work particularly well as part of a wider home energy plan. An air source heat pump uses electricity to provide heating and hot water, so solar generation can contribute to its running electricity during daylight hours. It will not cover all heating demand, especially on cold, darker winter days when a heat pump is working hardest, but the two technologies can complement each other.

The same applies to electric vehicle charging. A smart charger can be set to make use of surplus solar energy where appropriate, while still ensuring the vehicle is ready when you need it. This is one reason it helps to think ahead. A homeowner replacing a boiler now may not be ready for a heat pump immediately, but may want solar capacity that supports future electrical demand.

Likewise, a heavily shaded roof with limited usable space may produce too little electricity for the investment to make sense.

A good decision is not about being persuaded that solar suits every property. It is about understanding the likely generation, how much you can use, what you will be paid for export and how the installation fits with the rest of your home. With those details in place, solar PV can become a dependable part of a warmer, more efficient and lower-carbon Sussex home for years to come.
